Network settings

A note on DHCP

If your operating system supports it you should use DHCP to automatically configure the network settings for your computer. This page is provided to allow you to determine the appropriate network parameters for older operating systems that don't support DHCP or for cases where DHCP can't be used, however.

E-mail settings

Refer to the Physics Mail section for common e-mail client settings.

Campus name servers

There are two name servers on campus (a primary and a backup). Their IP addresses are:
  • 149.171.96.2

  • 149.171.192.2

VLANs

Physics uses VLANs. A Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a construct used to separate physical and logical networks. VLANs make it possible to define networks which span buildings or even campuses, and they also allow access control on a per-VLAN basis. There are four VLANs in the School as outlined below.

Physics-general

  • For staff offices and postgrad/honours study areas

  • Network: 129.94.162.0

  • Subnet mask (as dotted quad): 255.255.254.0

  • CIDR block number: 129.94.162.0/23

  • Broadcast: 129.94.163.255

  • Gateway router: 129.94.162.1

Physics-labs

  • For teaching laboratories

  • Network: 129.94.149.128

  • Subnet mask (as dotted quad): 255.255.255.128

  • CIDR block number: 129.94.149.128/25

  • Broadcast: 129.94.149.255

  • Gateway router: 129.94.149.129

Physics-public

  • For public access areas

  • Network: 129.94.149.0

  • Subnet mask (as dotted quad): 255.255.255.192

  • CIDR block number: 129.94.149.0/26

  • Broadcast: 129.94.149.63

  • Gateway router: 129.94.149.1

Physics-quantum

  • For Centre for Quantum Computing

  • Network: 129.94.141.0

  • Subnet mask (as dotted quad): 255.255.255.0

  • CIDR block number: 129.94.141.0/24
